COSPLAY&CRAFT - THERMOPLASTICS REVIEW

Hey guys!

This review will be slightly different, since today I’ll be review 4 different thermoplastics from Cosplay&Craft!

Cosplay&Craft is a cosplay store based in France which sells wigs, cosplay materials, circle lenses, FX Make-up and even books and prints! Also, if you’re from Europe, you won’t have problems with customs as it usually happens.

A Cosplay&Craft é uma loja de cosplay baseada em França que vende perucas, material para cosplay, lentes de contacto, Maquilhagem FX e até livros e prints! Além disso, se estiverem na Europa, não terão problemas com a alfândega como costume.

I received the package really fast and everything came safely packed!

Inside it I received a sheet of Foam PE65 2MM, Thibra, Thermocraft and Worbla’s Meshed Art. I’ll be reviewing them individually and comparing them at the end!

Dentro, recebi uma folha de Foam PE65 2MM, Thibra, Thermocraft e Worbla’s Meshed Art. Irei fazer a review de cada uma individualmente e compará-las no final!

You probably have come across EVA foam if you’ve been cosplaying for a while. It’s used from small accessories all the way to gigantic armors, so it’s a really versatile material.

The main reason why people choose this material is because it’s cheap. At Cosplay&Craft an M sheet (100x50cm) costs only 5.99€.

Provavelmente já se cruzaram com EVA se já fazem cosplay há algum tempo. É usada desde pequenos acessórios até armaduras gigantes, por isso é um material muito versátil.

A principal razão pela qual as pessoas escolhem este material é por ser barato. Na Cosplay&Craft, uma folha M (100x50cm) custa apenas 5.99€.

In the picture you can see it before and after being molded with an heat gun: normal, painted, primed (with two layer of wood glue) and primed and painted (with one layer of acrylic paint).

Na foto podem vê-lo antes e depois de ser moldado com uma pistola de calor: normal, pintado, selado (com duas camadas de cola branca) e selado e pintado (com uma camada de tinta acrílica).

Due to its flexibility, it’s great for pieces you need to move or to make the structure of an armor or accessory, that you can then cover with a thermoplastic.

If you choose not to use that technique, it can also be hardened by layers of wood glue. It doesn’t hold its shape as well as actual thermoplastics and it’s very light.

Devido à sua flexibilidade, é ótimo para peças que precisam de se mexer ou para a estrutura de uma armadura ou acessório, que podem depois cobrir com um termoplástico.

Se escolherem não usar esta técnica, também pode ser endurecido com camadas de cola branca. Não mantém a forma tão bem como termoplásticos e é bastante leve.

 

Thibra is the hardest thermoplastic. However, after heating, it turns very flexible, almost like chewing gum. It’s a bit hard to control if you haven’t had contact with it first, but it’s really great for small items or details.

An M sheet (68x55cm) costs 16€ at Cosplay&Craft.

Thibra é o termoplástico mais duro. No entanto, depois de aquecer, torna-se muito flexível, quase como pastilha elástica. É um pouco difícil de controlar se não tiveram contacto com ela antes, mas é ótima para pequenos items ou detalhes.

Uma folha M (68x55cm) custa 16€ na Cosplay&craft.

You can heat it up and then mold it with your hands – be careful not to burn yourself! – and re-use left-over scraps. It’s very sticky on both sides, so that’s something to look out for. Since it turns so flexible, it might get too thin if you mold it over something and even rip in some areas.

It still needs priming or the paint will be scratched off, as in the other materials. However, the surface is super smooth and easy to prime. 

Pode ser aquecida e moldada com as mãos – cuidado para não se queimarem! – e reutilizar tiras de sobras. Cola-se muito facilmente dos dois lados, isso é algo com que ter cuidado. Já que se torna tão flexível, pode tornar-se muito fina se a moldarem em cima de algo e até rasgar-se em algumas áreas.

Precisa de primer ou a tinta sairá, tal como os outros materiais. Ainda assim, a superfície é muito lisa e fácil de aplicar primer.

Thermocraft has a very distinctive texture and it’s also very thin. Because of this, it’s a bit difficult to handle without breaking it in any areas. Of course, this is from someone with no experience with it!

An M sheet (75x50cm) costs 13.99€ at Cosplay&craft.

Thermocraft tem uma textura bastante distintiva e também é muito fino. Por isso, é um pouco difícil de manusear sem partir em certas áreas. Claro, isto vem de alguém sem experiência com ele!

After it cools down, it’s hard but still flexible. It could easily be used with EVA foam, since it also sticks nicely and would probably work best over it for any purpose. 

When heated, it’s not as flexible as Thibra, which makes it easier to mold. To prime, I think a bit of sanding and wood glue would do just fine!

Depois de arrefecer, torna-se duro mas ainda flexível. Pode facilmente ser usado com EVA, já que também se cola enquanto quente e provavelmente funcionaria melhor por cima da EVA para qualquer propósito.

Quando quente, não é tão flexível como Thibra, o que o torna mais fácil de moldar. Acho que lixar um pouco e aplicar cola branca serviria para selar completamente!

Worbla’s Meshed Art seems to me to be between Thermocraft and Thibra. It’s hard but still a bit flexible, although its surface is smooth.

A Worbla’s Meshed Art parece-me estar entre Thermocraft e Thibra. É dura mas um pouco flexível, ainda que a sua superfície seja lisa.

It’s easy to adhere to other materials mainly on the backside, but the front is still sticky, which makes it a bit harder to manage. However, I feel like this is the easiest one to work with.

When heated, it doesn’t become as thin, so it won’t break as easily and when cooled it holds its shape perfectly, while still maintaining some flexibility. This is why I believe this material would be great for armors or breastplates.

É fácil de aderir a outros materiais principalmente no lado de trás, mas à frente também se cola facilmente, o que a torna um pouco mais difícil de manusear. Ainda assim, acho que este material é o mais fácil com que trabalhar.

Quando aquecido, não se torna tão fino, por isso não é tão fácil de se partir e quando arrefece mantém perfeitamente a sua forma, embora ainda mantendo alguma flexibilidade. É por isto que considero que este material seria ótimo para armaduras ou breastplates.

Here’s a table I created to compare all four materials, using a scale of 0 to 3 - 0 being low and 3 being high.

Aqui está uma tabela que criei para comparar os quatro materiais, usando uma escala de 0 a 3 - 0 sendo baixo e 3 sendo alto.

There really isn’t a way to define which material is the best because they’re all great for different things. I do hope this review helped you choose which applies best to your needs!
